Overall ‘Outstanding’ – Care Quality Commission (CQC) rate Claremont Private Hospital

Claremont Private Hospital has recently been awarded an overall rating of ‘Outstanding’ by the Care Quality Commission (CQC).

A team of CQC inspectors visited the hospital during February and March 2017, as part of the CQC’s ongoing inspection programme for Independent Acute Hospitals. Claremont is now only one of three independent acute hospitals in the North of England to achieve an Outstanding rating.

The inspectors were impressed with the emphasis that staff put on patient care being at the heart of everything they did, staff often went ‘the extra mile’ to ensure the needs of patients were met with open and positive interactions. There was a real focus on quality and a strong leadership team who ensured that systems and processes were robust and enabled staff to do their jobs as well as keeping patients safe.

Claremont’s previous Hospital Director, Andy Davey was delighted with the rating, giving full credit to the clinical and non-clinical staff, as well as Consultants, Doctors and Medical Specialists who together make up the hospital team. He said “To say I’m proud of our amazing team at Claremont is an understatement. Each and every member of staff plays a daily role in ensuring we consistently deliver first class healthcare to all our patients in a warm, friendly and safe environment. We welcomed this inspection by the CQC to showcase what we do at Claremont every day, not just while they were with us. We work as a team at Claremont, striving to ensure every single person who comes through our doors receives exceptional care and is welcomed as if they were our own family.” 

The CQC rated Claremont as ‘Outstanding’ overall because:

  • They saw excellent leadership from managers who were passionate about patient care and staff welfare. Visible to all levels of staff and patients.
  • There were robust governance structures and reporting mechanisms in place where performance and the quality of the service was reviewed and changes made. Actions were monitored through audit processes and reported to leadership and governance committees.
  • A service wide vision and strategy that was embedded across the organisation.
  • Patient care was at the heart of the service and the priority for staff. There were several areas of outstanding caring practice.
  • Staff were trained in a nationally recognised accreditation programme in customer care.
  • The hospital took part in a recognised comprehensive observational study process to consider the approach by staff to the general care of patients, the level of patient/visitor engagement, and the environmental factors within patient reception areas.
  • There were effective systems to keep people safe and to learn from critical incidents.
  • The hospital environment was visibly clean and there were measures to prevent the spread of infection.
  • There were adequate numbers of suitably qualified, skilled, and experienced staff (including doctors and nurses) to meet patients’ needs.
  • There were arrangements to ensure staff had and maintained the skills required to do their jobs.
