Mr Hamer is part of Sheffield Orthopaedics Ltd (SOL), proudly in partnership with Claremont Private Hospital. In addition to Claremont’s CQC accreditation, SOL has it’s own CQC accreditation and is part of Claremont’s 24 hours a day, 7 days a week on-call consultant cover provision for inpatients. SOL Consultants are integral to the reduced length of stay Claremont patients enjoy, compared to other providers.
Mr Hamer is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at Northern General Hospital, with a private practice at Claremont.
Andy Hamer was a medical student in Bristol, where he first developed his interest in Orthopaedic Surgery. He then moved to a registrar post in Sheffield where he has stayed since. He was awarded an MD from the University of Sheffield for his work on allograft bone strength in revision hip surgery in 1997. He was then awarded a Wishbone Trust travelling fellowship in 1997, and spent his fellowship in Melbourne, Australia in 1997-1998 furthering his subspeciality training. He was appointed as a consultant to the Northern General Hospital in 1998 with a special interest in hip and knee arthroplasty and revision surgery.
He was the previous Training Programme Director for the South Yorkshire registrar training programme and sat on the Specialist Advisory Committee at the Royal College of Surgeons, advising on training issues. He is an examiner for the FRCS (Orth) exam for trainees completing their training. He was elected to be Vice President of the British Hip Society in March 2019 and will become President in 2020.
He has an active role in research into hip and knee replacement surgery. He is married with three daughters, and enjoys outdoor pursuits including sailing and motorsport.
